If this is your first time at a B&B relax, you'll like it. First of all it is important to realize that by staying at a B&B you are not imposing upon the host. If we didn't want you in our home we would have chosen a different line of work (and B&B's in which the owner is not living in the house probably should have)! Secondly, a B&B is not a motel or hotel. Usually B&B's have limited resources, so there will likely be no sauna, no pool, no waterfront, or a breakfast menu with choices, but B&B's more than compensate by paying attention to your needs, by getting to know you, by helping you get the most out of your time away from home, and by providing a real room in a real house, no noise, no problems, period! Finally, a B&B is not a restaurant, in fact in many places, it is illegal for a bed and breakfast to serve anything other than breakfast to anyone other than its own guests. So, you pull into the guest parking place and come to the front door. The first thing to do is to knock on the door, and get invited in. You will be shown around the house, and will be told which areas you are free to use, where breakfast will be served, and at what time (this is where you explain that you are going fishing at 5AM). You may be given a key to the front door, so from now on you don't have to knock, and by this time you should be looking at your room for the night. After you bring in your luggage and get settled, you may be interested in getting something to eat, and most hosts will be happy to make suggestions based on your preferences, (cost, time, menu etc.). When you return from dinner, you can go to sleep, read a book in your room, or visit with whoever you find (remember that people visiting B&B's are usually very friendly, and very interesting, just like you). In the morning, your hosts will have already been up several hours preparing breakfast, and having a little quiet time before the day starts. At the appointed time everyone gathers at the dining room table for breakfast. It is here that you will notice something special. Other guests (that you may not have met yet) will want to find out where you are from, what interests you have, and what you do or what you have done. Often there is never a quiet moment, and usually guests enjoy the experience, for many it is in stark contrast with their everyday breakfast. It is really surprising how frequently people from vastly different places know someone in common, or find they work in the same field. One thing is certain, you will enjoy the experience, and most likely, the best breakfast you will ever have will be at a B&B. After breakfast you need to disappear for a while so your hosts can make your bed, put in fresh towels, clean the bathroom etc. Options are to read on the front porch, or go to a nearby town to shop or go to the beach or take a hike in the woods or...... . When you run out of gas, (usually by about 3PM) you can take a nap before dinner, or if you are not out of gas keep on going. Most people try to see Leelanau in two days (which is not possible) and they do not allow time for just relaxing. Don't do it, this is a unique time, stop and smell the roses while you are here (that's an expression, we don't know how to grow roses). Well that's about it, you should be comfortable staying at a B&B now, remember, its just like falling off a log, no sweat, not a problem you can do this...... now about that reservation!
